Hope Restored: Reef Restoration around Bonaire

Science predicts corals are doomed in the ocean of the future. But an example from Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean provides a glimmer of hope.


During my master's research on coral reefs off Java in 1998, I became witness to a global coral bleaching event which devastated reefs around the planet. Ever then, I have been very concerned about the future of coral reefs and passionate about restoration projects.


In 2022, I immersed myself in a reef restoration course on the island of Bonaire and produced the short film "Hope Restored" about one of the planet's most successful reef restoration projects.


The 13 minute documentary has featured at numerous film festivals around the world and was selected for the Jackson Wild World Wildlife Day showcase in March 2023.



In September 2022, CNN International aired a four minute edit from the film on their programme "Call To Earth":
